The History of the Las Vegas Monorail

The Las Vegas Monorail began its journey as a modest 1-mile shuttle between the MGM Grand and Bally's in 1995. Initially conceived to ease congestion on the Strip, the system expanded significantly in 2004 to its current 3.9-mile route. It's a testament to Las Vegas's commitment to providing innovative transportation solutions for its visitors and residents alike.

What is the Las Vegas Monorail?

The Las Vegas Monorail is an elevated railway system that serves as a quick and efficient method for getting around the Strip. Unlike traditional public transport systems, the monorail is designed specifically for the needs of Las Vegas visitors, offering a direct route to some of the city's key attractions and resorts without the hassle of traffic congestion. It transports nearly 5 million passengers each year, with an average of 67,000 riders during citywide conventions, effectively replacing approximately 22,334 taxi rides per event.

Operating with a 100% electric, zero-emission fleet, the Monorail significantly reduces environmental impact, cutting over 27 tons of emissions and saving more than 2 million vehicle miles across Southern Nevada annually. Utilizing regenerative braking technology, the system captures and reuses up to 20% of its energy during deceleration.

By removing an estimated 2.1 million vehicle miles from the region's major roads each year, the Las Vegas Monorail contributes to a greener environment. This mileage savings equates to over nine lunar trips, showcasing the substantial positive effect on reducing traffic and pollution in Southern Nevada.

Cost-Effectiveness

Riding the Las Vegas Monorail is a budget-friendly alternative to taxis or rideshares, especially considering the Strip's frequent traffic jams. A single ride ticket costs $5.50, while a day pass is priced at $13.45, offering unlimited rides. For longer stays, there are also two to seven-day passes available, ranging from $23.75 to $57.50, providing excellent value for those planning to explore the Strip extensively.
