I recently visited the newly opened Grand Central Madison, a significant addition to the New York City's transportation infrastructure. Located beneath the historic Grand Central Terminal in Midtown Manhattan, Grand Central Madison is a remarkable achievement in urban transit development.
The terminal, part of the East Side Access project, officially opened on January 25, 2023. This monumental project, involving the construction of 40 miles of new tracks and a new terminal, represents the Metropolitan Transportation Authority's (MTA) largest capital project to date. The completion of this project is not just an expansion of the system; it's a transformative step for the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR), providing direct access to Manhattan's East Side for the first time.

Spanning an area of 700,000 square feet, Grand Central Madison includes 120,000 square feet dedicated to passenger use and 25,000 square feet of retail space. The station layout is impressive, featuring 22 elevators and 47 escalators, more than any other LIRR station. The station is uniquely designed with its north end at 48th Street and south end at 43rd Street, with each cross street between 45th and 48th Streets featuring its own artwork and color scheme to aid navigation.
For those commuting from Long Island, this terminal offers a direct connection to all 11 LIRR lines, significantly reducing travel times and congestion at Penn Station. The project aims to benefit over 160,000 passengers daily, saving them up to 40 minutes on their trips.
An intriguing aspect of Grand Central Madison is its focus on art. The station features large-scale, site-specific murals by renowned artists Yayoi Kusama and Kiki Smith. Additionally, there is digital artwork by Gabriel Barcia-Colombo, Jordan Brauner, and Red Nose Studio, as well as an exhibit curated by the International Center of Photography.
Getting to the LIRR concourse is convenient with multiple entrances, including the direct access at 383 Madison Avenue, on the southeast corner of 47th Street. There are also several street-level and Grand Central Terminal access points. The station operates daily, closing between 2 a.m. to 5:30 a.m.
