My first encounter with the captivating city of Washington, D.C. was during an elementary school class trip. Little did I know then that this vibrant city would play such a significant role in shaping my future. Throughout college, my studies in political science only fueled my curiosity and passion for this remarkable city. This led me to apply to the White House Intern Program, where I ended up witnessing history and the inner workings of government on a daily basis. However, my busy schedule at the White House prevented me from fully exploring the wonders of Washington. Therefore, after college, I made it a point to return to DC. Eager to discover the city's rich history and vibrant culture, I took a flight to DC and began my adventure.

“Washington, DC truly stands as a testament to the nation's resilience and the indomitable spirit that binds its people together.”

Day One: Embracing the National Mall

Arriving in DC, I settled into the Sheraton Pentagon City Hotel, situated just outside the city in Virginia. Eager to dive into the heart of Washington, I hopped on a short Metro ride to the National Mall. The Mall, with its sprawling green spaces and grand memorials, serves as a testament to the nation's history and aspirations.

My first stop was the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum, where I marveled at the countless achievements and milestones of human exploration. From the Wright brothers' first flight to the awe-inspiring Apollo missions, this museum captured the essence of our ceaseless pursuit of the skies.

Afterward, I made my way to Arlington Cemetery, a place of profound reverence. As I wandered among the rows of white gravestones, I couldn't help but be moved by the solemnity and sacrifice that permeated the air. Paying my respects at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier near Arlington House and the Kennedy graves, with their eternal flame, was a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made for our nation.

I then headed to the Vietnam Memorial, with its solemn and reflective atmosphere, was a deeply moving experience that allowed me to pay tribute to the brave individuals who sacrificed their lives during the war.

Concluding my first day, I headed to the Lincoln Memorial, standing tall and resolute. Gazing up at the majestic statue of Abraham Lincoln, I couldn't help but feel inspired by the profound words etched into the walls surrounding him.

Day Two: Exploring History and Culture

I began my second day by immersing myself in the vibrant atmosphere of Chinatown, delving into its unique blend of eastern and western influences. Following that, I visited Ford's Theater and the Petersen House, where the tragic events of President Lincoln's assassination unfolded. Standing in the very room where he took his last breath, I was transported back in time, connecting with a pivotal moment in American history.

Continuing my exploration, I strolled through the city, passing by notable landmarks such as the FBI Building, and eventually arrived at the International Spy Museum. There, I uncovered the intriguing world of espionage and marveled at the extraordinary tales of cunning and intrigue.

To refuel, I indulged in a delectable lunch at a local delicatessen before making my way to the magnificent Union Station. The grandeur of its architecture and bustling energy captivated me, offering a glimpse into the city's thriving transportation history.

To add a touch of whimsy to the day, I embarked on a thrilling DC Ducks Boat Tour. The tour starts by driving around and passing landmarks in the city. Then at the exciting conclusion of the tour, the bus entered the Potomac River, and suddenly our bus was also a boat. The unique vantage point from the water allowed me to witness the city from a different perspective and appreciate its splendid beauty.

Day Three: Reflection and Exploration

On the third day, I embarked on a poignant visit to the U.S. Holocaust Museum. This deeply moving experience brings to life the horrors of the Holocaust and leaves an indelible impact on its visitors. As I walked through the exhibits, my thoughts turned to my own family history, particularly my great-grandmother who tragically lost her life during those dark times. The museum served as a stark reminder of the importance of preserving history and working towards a future of compassion and understanding.

In need of solace and fresh air, I ventured along the Mall, enjoying the warmth of the sun on my face. Eager to immerse myself in knowledge, I made a brief stop at the captivating National Museum of Natural History. Among its treasures, the gem and mineral displays dazzled me, showcasing the earth's extraordinary creations. Then I spent a little time at the National Museum of American History which offered a look at the nation's past, showcasing the artifacts and stories that shaped America's cultural heritage.

To culminate the day, I ascended the Washington Monument, an iconic symbol of the nation's enduring spirit. From its lofty heights, I marveled at the panoramic views of DC, a testament to the city's grandeur and vitality.

My penultimate day in Washington began with a visit to the Supreme Court, where the pillars of justice stood tall. From there, I ventured to the Library of Congress, a treasure trove of knowledge and an architectural masterpiece.

My Congressmember arranged for one of his staff to give me a tour the U.S. Capitol. Witnessing the chambers of both the Senate and the House of Representatives, as well as the beautiful rotunda, gave me a profound appreciation for the democratic process that shapes our nation.

In the evening, I made my way to the Tidal Basin, eagerly anticipating the breathtaking beauty of the Jefferson Memorial and the renowned cherry blossoms. These delicate pink blossoms, gifted to the United States by Japan, created a mesmerizing backdrop for one of America's founding fathers.
